Seasonal to Decadal (S2D) Forecasts

Introducing seasonal to decadal forecasts: Coming soon to ClimateData.ca

Beginning in 2025, ClimateData.ca will provide S2D forecast products and resources.

Why seasonal to decadal?

S2D forecasts bridge the gap between weather forecasts and climate projections. They can be used to support decision making on a monthly to 10-year timescale.

What’s coming in 2025?

Check out new articles on the Learning Zone and News pages and check back for interactive S2D forecast maps and data coming later in 2025! There is also an expanded Glossary and a FAQ to help answer your questions.

How can I access forecasts now?

Seasonal Forecasts for Canada (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

Access seasonal forecasts produced by the Canadian seasonal prediction system. These include probabilistic seasonal forecasts of temperature, precipitation, sea surface temperature, snow water equivalent, surface solar radiation, cloud fraction and specific humidity for Canada, as well as global forecasts of temperature and precipitation.

MSC (Meteorological Service of Canada) Open Data: Data and Products of the Canadian Seasonal to Interannual Prediction System (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

The Canadian Seasonal to Interannual Prediction System (CanSIPS) carries out physics calculations to arrive at probabilistic predictions, resulting in seasonal forecasts. Geographical coverage is global. Predictions and corresponding hindcast are made available monthly. This data is available on the MSC GeoMet web service as well as MSC Datamart data server service.

MSC AniMet (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

MSC AniMet is a mapping tool that allows users to interact with MSC Open Data and provides access to GeoMet-Weather and GeoMet-Climate layers including Canadian Seasonal to Interannual Prediction System (CanSIPS) seasonal forecast products. The resulting maps can be downloaded and shared with a permalink.

Fire Weather Severity Monthly and Seasonal Forecasts (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

The monthly and seasonal forecast maps present predictions of fire weather severity based on the monthly and seasonal severity rating. Predictions are based on ECCC’s Canadian Seasonal to Interannual Prediction System (CanSIPS), information in the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS), and advice from provincial agencies.

Canadian Drought Outlook Monthly Forecasts (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada)

The Canadian Drought Outlook predicts if drought across Canada will develop, stay the same or improve for the end of the target month. The Canadian Drought Outlook maps are generated using Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) Global Ensemble Prediction System (GEPS) forecast data.

WMO Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update

The Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update is issued annually by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It provides a synthesis of the global annual to decadal predictions produced by the WMO-designated Global Producing Centres and other contributing centres.
